Our Story
African Coffee Brands prides itself on being the pioneer business promoting and marketing African coffee brands in Europe. African Coffee Brands is a joint venture business between Van Haki Amsterdam Consultancy, a Dutch Management consulting firm and Bensia Agro Uganda Limited, a Ugandan company dealing in the export and import of Agricultural commodities. We organize the Africa-Europe Coffee Brands Expo, a platform that showcases African coffee products to the European audience, creating opportunities for African coffee roasters to engage directly with European consumers, retailers, and coffee enthusiasts.
Currently, our focus is on the finest coffee brands and best roasters from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Our vision is to cover brands from all African coffee-producing countries within the next five years. We aim to become the leading distributor of African coffee brands in Europe, increasing the export of African roasted coffee and promoting its consumption among European consumers.
Our History
The story of African Coffee Brands began in 2010, when the passion for a good cup of coffee prompted Juma Kiggundu, its co- founder, to search for an African coffee in Dutch supermarkets. This search was futile, as there wasn’t any African coffee brand available in any of the supermarkets in the Netherlands. The entrepreneurial spirit ignited the idea to import and sell African coffee in the Netherlands. This set him on a search for a suitable supplier and all he could find was Good African Coffee, which was the first African company to have its coffee listed in a major United Kingdom supermarket.
In 2011, Juma founded Van Haki Koffie. Van Haki Koffie’s mission was to make it easier for everyone in the Netherlands to buy and enjoy coffee produced and roasted in Africa and the vision was to have African coffee in all the major supermarkets in the Netherlands.
In the same year, Juma signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Good African Coffee. Unfortunately, Good African Coffee closed shop before Van Haki Koffie had realized its vision. Nonetheless, the closure of Good African Coffee didn’t end Juma’s desire and resolve to bring an African coffee brand to a Dutch, or European consumer. The disappearance of Good African Coffee left a vacuum in the African coffee industry and the nascent roast coffee industry in Africa couldn’t produce a quick substitute for Good African coffee.
In 2023, almost two decades after an African coffee brand was first listed in a UK supermarket, Juma attended the Second G-25 Coffee Summit in Kampala Uganda. The summit resolved on the issue of value addition and the need for coffee producing nations to limit the exploitation caused by exporting green coffee with little value addition. Attending this summit made Juma realize again the need and importance of extending the market for African roasted coffee products beyond the continent. He thought that connecting African roasters directly to European consumers is the best strategy to limit the economic abuse and exploitation coffee producing countries are grappling with.
In 2024, Juma teamed up with Bensia Agro Uganda Limited and they co- founded African Coffee Brands. The idea is to create a platform that connects African Coffee roasters to European consumers. Hence, the birth of Africa-Europe Coffee Brands Expo. Besides the Expo which brings roasters and consumers in one place, African Coffee Brands owns a web shop that sells and delivers African coffee products to consumers in the Netherlands. In 2026, the first African Coffee Brands brick and mortar store featuring only African coffee products will be opened in Amsterdam.
In February 2025, African Coffee Brands will organize and host the first coffee Expo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands with a particular focus on African coffee brands. The experience and knowledge acquired in the Amsterdam event will set in motion plans to organize similar events in other European countries and cities. We work with all industry stakeholders and the friends of Africa to share Africa’s best coffee with the world. Together we can change the fortunes of the African coffee industry from a raw material to a finished product oriented industry.
